Chapter 5
What Has Already Been Tried
Learning From Reality Before Adding More Effort
Before planning anything new, there is one step that cannot be skipped. You must understand what has already been tried. Most coaching ignores this or treats it casually. That approach almost guarantees repetition of failure and abandonment of success.
Why This Step Matters
Every business owner arrives at coaching with history. They have:
- Tried strategies
- Made decisions
- Invested time and money
- Experienced wins and losses
If that history is not examined properly, it quietly controls every decision that follows. Ignoring it does not create a fresh start. It creates blind spots.
Start With What Didn't Work
The first question is direct: What have you already tried that didn't work? This question is not rushed. It is explored. For each attempt, the coach guides the client to clarify:
- What was done
- Over what period of time
- With what level of consistency
Vague answers are gently tightened. "I tried marketing" becomes "I ran paid ads for six weeks without tracking conversions." Clarity matters more than speed.
Why Didn't It Work?
Once an attempt is clearly described, the next question follows naturally: Why didn't it work? More often, failure falls into one of a few categories:
- The strategy was flawed
- The execution was inconsistent
- The timeline was unrealistic
- The environment wasn't ready
- The metrics were wrong or missing
The coach does not provide these categories as labels. They help the client reason their way there. The purpose is not to assign fault. It is to prevent repetition.
Then Look at What Did Work
Only after failures are understood do we look at success. Clients often overlook small wins because they don't match the scale of their ambition. This step forces attention to what actually produced results, even if those results were modest.
Often, the most effective next move is not something new, but something already proven, applied deliberately.
What This Step Produces
When done properly, this step creates:
- Clarity about what to avoid
- Awareness of what to repeat or expand
- Confidence grounded in evidence
- Better decision-making in the next step
It also builds trust. Clients feel understood, not judged. They see that coaching is not about guesswork, but about learning from reality.
