Chapter 6
Brainstorming Without Losing Control
What Could You Try?
Brainstorming is where most coaching either becomes powerful or completely useless. Done badly, it turns into optimism, distraction, and endless discussion. Done properly, it creates clear options grounded in reality.
Why Brainstorming Comes After Reflection
Brainstorming without context produces noise. When clients brainstorm before reviewing past attempts, they repeat mistakes, chase ideas that already failed, and ignore what has already worked.
By this point in the framework the global objective is clear, the current milestone is defined, and what has worked and not worked is understood. Now brainstorming has boundaries. Those boundaries are what make it useful.
The Purpose of This Step
The purpose of brainstorming is not to find the perfect solution. It is to generate viable options. Options give the client agency. They move the conversation from reaction to choice.
The coach's role here is to facilitate thinking, not to contribute ideas.
Creating the Right Environment
Brainstorming works best when it feels open but not unstructured. The coach makes this clear at the start:
- Nothing is being decided yet
- All ideas are provisional
- Evaluation comes later
At the same time, the coach maintains boundaries:
- Ideas must serve the current milestone
- Ideas must respect what has already failed
- Ideas must be realistic within the business context
Freedom without structure leads nowhere.
Avoiding the Two Common Traps
The first is narrowing too quickly. Cutting ideas before they are fully expressed limits thinking and pushes the client toward safe but ineffective choices.
The second is letting brainstorming run too long. Endless ideation creates the illusion of progress while delaying commitment.
The coach manages both by keeping the step intentional and time-bound.
Why This Step Builds Confidence
Brainstorming done properly builds confidence because it shows the client they are not stuck. Even when options are limited, seeing them clearly reduces anxiety and indecision.
The client is no longer reacting to problems. They are choosing how to respond. That shift is one of the quiet strengths of this framework.
