Chapter 12
Completion and Transition
Ending One Objective Without Losing Momentum
Most coaching relationships don't end badly. They end quietly. Momentum slows. Focus drifts. Sessions become lighter. Eventually, the work that once felt purposeful turns into maintenance conversations and vague check-ins. This happens because completion is rarely handled deliberately.
Knowing When an Objective Is Complete
A global objective is complete when the outcome defined at the start is achieved. Not when:
- The client feels satisfied
- Progress slows
- Something else becomes interesting
- Coaching feels repetitive
Completion is objective, not emotional.
Marking Completion Explicitly
When an objective is complete, it is marked as such. The coach helps the client:
- Recognise what has been achieved
- See the distance between where they started and where they are now
- Understand which actions and habits created the result
This is not celebration for its own sake. It is reinforcement of cause and effect.
Reviewing the Completed Objective
Before moving forward, the framework requires a brief review:
- What worked consistently?
- What required the most effort?
- What systems or habits must remain in place?
- What can now be deprioritised or removed?
Restarting the Framework at a Higher Level
Once the next global objective is defined, the framework begins again. New milestones are identified. The most important milestone is selected. The reflection and planning steps are run again. Execution begins. The loop resumes.
The structure is the same. The level of work is higher. This repetition is intentional. Mastery comes from using the same system to solve bigger problems, not from constantly changing methods.
Why This Creates Long-Term Coaching Relationships
This approach naturally creates long-term coaching without manipulation. Clients stay because:
- Progress is visible
- Direction is clear
- Coaching feels cumulative
- There is always a next level to work toward
There is no artificial dependency. Clients could leave at any time. Many don't, because the framework continues to produce results.
