Chapter 1
The Mike Martin Business Coaching Framework
A bespoke methodology built from years of working with real business owners
Most coaching doesn't fail because coaches are bad people. It fails because the structure is wrong. Modern coaching has drifted into something closer to therapy, mentoring, or motivational conversation. Sessions start fresh every week. Context gets reset. Progress gets talked about instead of measured. And sooner or later, both coach and client start pretending something is happening.
Coaching is not about having answers. Coaching is not about motivation. Coaching is not about asking someone what they want to get from today. Those approaches create short-term engagement and long-term stagnation. Real coaching is about continuity.
A business does not move forward in isolated conversations. It moves forward through objectives, milestones, actions, tracking, and repetition. Coaching should reflect that reality.
The Problem With Session-Based Coaching
When a coach starts every session by asking, "What do you want to get from today?", they unintentionally train the client to think small. That question encourages:
- Short-term thinking
- Emotional decision-making
- Constant resetting of focus
- A false sense of progress
It also turns coaching into a series of disconnected moments rather than a single, ongoing process. Every time context is reset, momentum is lost. The client leaves feeling heard, but not moved forward.
What Coaching Actually Is
Coaching is a long-term, structured process designed to move someone from where they are now to a clearly defined outcome. Not once. Not occasionally. Consistently.
The role of the coach is not to provide solutions. It is to hold the structure that allows solutions to emerge, be tested, measured, refined, and repeated. A good coach does not solve the problem for the client. A good coach makes it difficult for the client to drift, stall, or avoid reality. That requires a system.
Coaching as a Continuous Loop
Coaching works best when it operates as a continuous loop, not a series of standalone sessions. That loop always starts with a global objective. Everything else exists in service of that objective.
Once the objective is defined, the process becomes predictable:
- 1.Identify milestones
- 2.Decide what to work on next
- 3.Review what has and hasn't worked
- 4.Brainstorm options
- 5.Commit to action
- 6.Define steps, timelines, and tracking
- 7.Execute
- 8.Review
- 9.Repeat
The loop continues until the objective is complete. Then a new objective is defined, and the process begins again. There is no reset. There is no starting over. There is only forward motion.
The Coach's Role in the Loop
In this framework, the coach is not an expert with answers. The coach is the guardian of the process. Your job is to:
- Keep the global objective visible
- Prevent the client from skipping steps
- Ensure actions are chosen deliberately
- Make sure execution is tracked
- Maintain continuity over time
You do not need to be smarter than the client. You do not need industry experience. You do not need clever ideas.
You need discipline.
When the structure is sound, the client does the thinking. The progress comes from clarity, not instruction.
Why This Framework Exists
This framework was designed for one reason: results. Not motivation. Not insight. Not good conversations. Results.
It creates coaching engagements that:
- Stay focused on outcomes
- Build momentum instead of restarting
- Scale from one-to-one to groups and masterminds
- Reduce dependence on the coach
- Create long-term value instead of short-term relief
It also exposes weak coaching quickly. If a coach cannot hold this structure, no amount of charisma will compensate.
How to Use This Content
This is not content to read once. It is a framework to install. Each chapter explains one part of the system. Together, they form a complete coaching process that can be run with a single client or an entire group.
Read it slowly. Apply it deliberately. Repeat it relentlessly.
Coaching does not change lives because of insight. It changes lives because someone stayed in the loop long enough to finish what they started.
